Schauraum Berggasse 19

Since 2014, the Sigmund Freud Museum displays art in the former butcher shop at the storefront under the label "Showroom Berggasse 19".

In the course of an expansion in 2001, the Sigmund Freud Museum acquired the building’s storefront, which once housed Siegmund Kornmehl‘s butcher shop. With this store front shop, the museum acquired an “exterior” showroom. The windows of the storefront allow a new definition of the museum’s entrance area as a place for artistic intervention. The invitation of the American artist Joseph Kosuth in January 2002 was the first step to an occupation with this new kind of contact between art and outdoor space.
“A View from Outside – Reloaded” is the second sequel to the installation series “ A View from Outside” from 2003/2004 and its follow up “A View from Outside – Continued” from 2005/2006. Before the installation of Ann-Sofi Sidéns, the “7xANA by Susan Hefuna was on display (October 7, 2010 – March 13, 2011), from June
to October, Lala Rascic' installation "A Load from Inside - Reviewed" was on display.

Peter Kogler: Showroom Berggasse 19, 2015

30 April - 4 October 2015

Austrian multimedia artist Peter Kogler is creating the showroom at Berggasse 19 for the Sigmund Freud Museum. With the aid of his artistic manipulation Peter Kogler gives us a glimpse of a spatial structure that, illuminated by a 300-watt bulb, blurs, even shakes, the boundaries between the outside and inside.

Freud’s topographical understanding of the psychic apparatus suggests that we attend to those processes that take place at the boundaries of the systems, at the boundaries of the unconscious and preconscious (or conscious). Kogler’s web of lines not only inverts an external into an internal and vice versa. His biomorphic vocabulary of form is also immanent in the complex structure of our inner worlds of imagination and therefore lends itself to providing a visual counterpart to the “dynamic view of mental processes” (Sigmund Freud, The Unconscious, 1915).
